WARSAW — Polish authorities have successfully disrupted an advanced assassination plot orchestrated by Russian intelligence services targeting a dual U.S.-Ukrainian citizen on Polish soil. Prime Minister Donald Tusk termed the operation an unprecedented escalation in Moscow's hybrid warfare campaign against Western nations.
Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Tusk revealed that the intended target was a U.S. citizen of Ukrainian origin whose activities rendered them "inconvenient from the point of view of the Putin regime."
Swift Intervention by Security Services
According to Polish officials, the operation was neutralized at the eleventh hour. The primary suspect, a Russian national allegedly recruited and directed by Russian secret services to carry out the execution, was apprehended by Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) alongside local police on August 7.
The arrest followed a closely coordinated intelligence-sharing effort with American security services. A Warsaw court has ordered the suspect held in pre-trial custody for three months as the investigation continues.
An Unprecedented Threat to NATO Territory
Prime Minister Tusk emphasized the grave nature of the incident, noting it is the first recorded instance of Moscow attempting to orchestrate the targeted killing of an American citizen within the borders of a NATO member state.
"We have to accept the assumption that the Putin regime will try to eliminate people who are inconvenient for various reasons, in various places around the world," Tusk warned reporters. "This is the first situation of its kind in which someone, acting on Russian orders, decided to carry out an attack against an American citizen on the territory of another NATO country."
Escalating Pattern of European Sabotage
Western intelligence agencies have noted a sharp uptick in covert Russian operations, sabotage, and attempted targeted killings across Europe since the launch of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. European security officials have mapped hundreds of disruptive incidents, ranging from critical infrastructure arson to planned hits against high-profile dissidents, military defectors, and foreign advocates for Kyiv.
While Russian Foreign Ministry officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Warsaw's latest disclosure underscores mounting security alarms across the alliance's eastern flank. Polish authorities have cautioned that the country must remain on high alert for subsequent attempts by foreign intelligence assets to execute operations on European soil.
