The continuous plume of ash, originating from Europe's most active volcano, drifted across eastern Sicilian airspace, prompting aviation regulators and airport operator SAC to halt arrivals and departures.

The sudden airspace closure has affected hundreds of flights, leaving thousands of stranded travelers scrambling for alternatives. According to local reports, hundreds of flights have faced cancellations, while scores of others have been successfully diverted to alternative hubs across the island, including airports in Palermo, Trapani, and Comiso.
