WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is stepping down from her high-profile post at the end of August, President Donald Trump announced.
Leavitt, the youngest person in U.S. history to hold the position, stated that she is leaving the demanding role to focus on her young family.
Having recently returned from maternity leave following the May birth of her second child, she noted that balancing the rigorous daily schedule with motherhood became untenable.
"The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary," Leavitt wrote in a statement on social media.
A Stalwart Defender of the Administration
Since taking office in January 2025, the 28-year-old spokesperson earned a reputation as an unyielding defender of President Trump and his policy agenda. Known for her sharp delivery and frequent clashes with legacy media outlets, Leavitt became one of the administration's most recognizable and trusted faces.
Her tenure also marked a structural shift in White House press operations. Alongside senior communications staff, Leavitt pushed to expand briefing room access to digital outlets, podcasters, and independent media, altering traditional press pool dynamics.
Transitioning to an Outside Advisory Role
President Trump praised Leavitt's performance on social media, describing her as "one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office".
While departing her official West Wing office, Leavitt will not be entirely detached from Trump’s inner circle. The President confirmed that she will transition into a role as a top outside advisor, focusing heavily on strategic communications and supporting Republican efforts ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
The White House has not yet announced a successor to fill the press secretary vacancy.
