TOKYO — In a landmark policy shift, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) announced on Friday that it is raising its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%. This move pushes borrowing costs to their highest level since 1995, underscoring the central bank's ongoing departure from decades of aggressive monetary easing.
The decision, following a two-day monetary policy review, comes as policymakers grapple with persistent domestic inflationary pressures, rising import costs fueled by a weak yen, and broader global supply chain impacts linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Balancing Inflation and Economic Stability
The central bank voted to move the short-term policy rate from 1.0% to 1.25%, a faster timeline than its previous historical pacing. While underlying inflation approaches the BOJ’s targeted 2% threshold, officials remain cautious about the risk of prices overshooting due to elevated energy costs and shifts in foreign exchange rates.
"We must carefully monitor how global demand and foreign exchange trends continue to feed into wholesale and consumer pricing," the BOJ noted in its official policy statement. The bank emphasized that while monetary conditions will remain relatively accommodative for the time being, it stands ready to adjust its policy path further if economic indicators and price developments deviate from baseline projections.
Global and Market Repercussions
The rate hike has triggered immediate volatility across international financial and currency markets. Analysts are closely tracking the yen’s response, as well as potential ripples through the global "carry trade"—where investors historically leveraged low-yield Japanese currency to fund overseas assets.
As Governor Kazuo Ueda prepares to address international media, global investors will be scouring his remarks for hints on the future pace of normalization, and whether Japan’s departure from ultra-loose monetary policy will accelerate further into the coming fiscal quarters.
