Strait of Hormuz in Flames: Iran Targets 10 Ships in Massive Retaliation After U.S. Sinks Five Oil Tankers

DUBAI — The six-month-old conflict in the Middle East reached a dangerous new maritime threshold on Wednesday after Iran launched a coordinated wave of strikes against 10 commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.

The sweeping offensive by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was executed in direct retaliation for overnight U.S. military strikes that sent five Iranian oil tankers to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed its forces targeted and destroyed the vessels—identified as the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco, and M/T Derya—following repeated Iranian missile attacks on American warships patrolling the vital energy corridor.

Wednesday's escalation marks the largest single wave of shipping attacks recorded by both sides since the war began. Maritime security monitors reported that at least one seafarer was killed and another left missing amid the fiery exchanges, which turned the congested chokepoint into an active combat zone.

The spiraling naval warfare immediately rattled global commodities markets. Benchmark Brent crude futures surged past the $100 a barrel threshold for the first time since July, intensifying fears of renewed worldwide inflation and severe energy supply constraints.

In the wake of the strikes, the IRGC warned of further escalations, announcing plans to enforce an even wider off-limits maritime zone. With millions of barrels of crude daily transit routes hanging in the balance, international leaders have expressed grave concern that the tit-for-tat strategy risks triggering an unmanageable environmental and economic catastrophe across the region.
