MOSCOW — Six crew members were killed and another was injured after a Russian nuclear-capable Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber crashed during a training flight in Russia's far eastern Amur region.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the aircraft went down in an uninhabited area near the village of Krasnoyarovo, close to the Zeya River, shortly after taking off from the Ukrainka air base. According to officials, the bomber was not carrying any weapons at the time of the accident.
The sole surviving crew member sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical treatment. Preliminary assessments indicate that a technical malfunction may have caused the disaster, and an official commission has been deployed to the crash site to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Soviet-era Tu-95 "Bear" bomber is a core component of Russia's long-range strategic nuclear triad. This particular aircraft had previously been relocated for safekeeping following Ukrainian drone attacks under "Operation Spiderweb".
