Guarding the Silicon Surge: India Warns Chip Industry to Brace for Cyberthreats Amid Global Rise

New Delhi: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has issued a sharp warning to India’s burgeoning semiconductor sector, urging industry leaders to remain highly vigilant against potential cyberattacks and strategic disruptions.

As India rapidly scales its ambitions to become a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing, the country's growing technological prowess is increasingly viewed as a geopolitical challenge by established international players. Speaking on the inherent risks of entering a traditionally guarded global value chain, the Minister emphasized that India's rise will inevitably trigger friction from competitors unwilling to cede ground.

"We have to continuously be watchful of the potential geopolitical risks which will arise because India is now emerging as a country which can design and manufacture chips," Vaishnaw stated. "Obviously that will be seen as a threat by many other established players."

A Critical Reality Check for Domestic Fabs

The high-stakes warning comes on the heels of major policy milestones, including the implementation of the ambitious Semicon 2.0 framework and multi-billion-dollar commitments from global technology giants. 

With several fabrication units and assembly plants transitioning into active commercial production, the government is shifting focus toward fortifying digital and physical infrastructure against external vulnerabilities.

Industry participants have been explicitly directed to tighten their digital perimeters. "I have very candidly told the entire industry that be prepared for cyberattacks, be prepared for any other kinds of threats and any other kinds of disruptions that might get created by the countries who don't like India to come up in the semiconductor value chain," Vaishnaw noted.

Securing the Tech Sovereignty

Experts note that as semiconductors become central to national security and economic independence, safeguarding operational technology (OT) and supply chains is paramount. New Delhi is actively collaborating with industry stakeholders to implement robust defense mechanisms, zero-trust architectures, and strict cybersecurity protocols across upcoming facilities.

By openly addressing these geopolitical and cyber risks, India aims to ensure that its rapid ascent in the global tech ecosystem remains resilient against targeted digital sabotage and external interference.
