GAZA / CAIRO — Hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza returned to in-person classes for the first time in nearly three years, marking a fragile milestone for the war-torn enclave.
The resumption of the academic year brings an estimated 540,000 pupils back to learning environments. However, classrooms look drastically different than they did before the conflict: with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reporting that 98 percent of schools in Gaza have been damaged or completely destroyed, students are cramming into makeshift tents, tarpaulins, sheet metal structures, and damaged buildings.
The reopening unfolds in the wake of a devastating conflict that education officials report has killed around 22,000 students and more than 770 education workers, including 532 teachers. Despite the overwhelming destruction, lack of ventilation, and severe scarcity of supplies—where basic items like notebooks and pens have become heavily inflated or unaffordable for displaced families—children have expressed immense resilience.
The Ministry of Education, backed by international organizations and local agencies, pushed forward with the 2026–27 school year to salvage children's education. For students unable to reach physical spaces or those displaced outside the strip, supplementary online learning programs continue to operate.
