NAGOYA — Indian mixed martial arts athlete Varun Sanyal has officially withdrawn from the Asian Games following a severe medical emergency triggered by an aggressive weight-cutting procedure ahead of the competition.
Sanyal, the son of Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council member Sanjeev Sanyal, was scheduled to compete in the men's traditional MMA 77kg division on Sunday, a sport making its historic debut at the Games this year. To meet the weight limit after being slightly overweight, Sanyal utilized a high-temperature sauna room to rapidly expel water weight through heavy sweating, a method that can drop several pounds within hours but carries extreme physiological risks.
During the process, Sanyal collapsed and lost consciousness before being discovered by a Nepalese athlete who quickly alerted officials. Nikhil Kundera, President of the MMA Sports Federation, confirmed to PTI that Sanyal was rushed to a nearby hospital for evaluation, noting that while he is out of danger, he is in no condition to compete. After receiving medical clearance, Sanyal was discharged from the hospital around 3:00 AM and returned to the athletes' village cruise ship to recover. This unfortunate medical scare compounds a frustrating buildup to the event for the Indian delegation, following earlier administrative hurdles and delays upon arriving in Japan, and deals a major blow to India's campaign in the inaugural MMA event.
