TOKYO — In a landmark move underscoring its deep-seated bet on artificial intelligence, Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank Group has issued $11.1 billion in dollar- and euro-denominated senior notes. The multi-tranche debt offering is directed squarely toward funding the conglomerate's expanding investment commitments in generative AI titan OpenAI.
The massive capital raise comprises $10 billion in U.S. dollar-denominated senior notes split across various maturity terms, alongside dual €500 million euro-denominated tranches. Market analysts noted that the high-yield transaction ranks among the largest corporate bond offerings of its kind, reflecting founder Masayoshi Son's relentless strategy to anchor SoftBank at the forefront of global AI infrastructure.
The proceeds from the bond sale are earmarked to cover upcoming investment tranches and replace earlier short-term bridge financing. While the aggressive debt-backed expansion aims to elevate SoftBank's aggregate stake in OpenAI closer to the $64.6 billion mark, it also highlights the mounting financial pressures and elevated borrowing costs facing the conglomerate as it navigates the high-stakes global AI race.
