WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected a seven-day ceasefire proposal put forward by Iran. President Trump also signaled that the United States may resume military attacks following the upcoming midterm elections in November. Speaking to reporters at the United Nations on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the seven-day plan had been communicated to the U.S. through Qatar.
The new proposal outlines several conditions, including a seven-day halt to all military fronts and hostile actions across the Middle East—including Lebanon—the release of at least 12 billion dollars of Iran's frozen foreign assets, the lifting of U.S. oil sanctions against Iran, and the termination of the U.S. naval blockade against the country. According to Iran's stance, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened on the seventh day of the ceasefire. Araghchi noted that if America accepts these terms, the Strait of Hormuz would be opened and cargo movement through it would return to normal within seven days, a message that has already been conveyed to the U.S.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, President Trump rejected the proposal shortly after Iran made its position clear. The prominent international daily published this information by citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter. With the rejection of the ceasefire proposal, concerns remain high regarding the continuation of regional tensions and the status of the Strait of Hormuz.
