IMPHAL — At least nine people were killed and 14 houses were set on fire in a fresh wave of violence across three hill districts of Manipur within 24 hours. The incidents were reported in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, amid renewed tensions between the Kuki and Naga communities.
The violence involved shootings, ambushes and arson. In response, authorities imposed prohibitory orders near Chassad police station in Kamjong district. A shutdown was also called in Kangpokpi district following the attacks.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss the situation and efforts to restore peace in the state. Modi assured the state government of full support in its efforts to restore peace and stability, according to reports.
The chief minister condemned the killings and directed officials to take immediate steps to maintain order and protect residents. Investigations into the incidents are under way. Authorities have appealed to community leaders and residents to remain calm, avoid retaliatory violence and support efforts to restore peace.
