NISHIN — India won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan in the men’s cricket final at the Asian Games on Saturday, with captain Shreyas Iyer opting to set a target in the title clash.
India have retained the same playing XI that defeated Sri Lanka in the semi-final, with Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi among the players named in the side.
The pre-match toss also drew attention as the two captains did not exchange handshakes.
India, the defending champions, are seeking to retain the Asian Games gold medal after reaching the final for a second consecutive edition.
They advanced to the title match with a 124-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first semi-final on Thursday. India posted 169-7 in their 20 overs after being sent in to bat, with Ishan Kishan top-scoring with an unbeaten 80 from 46 deliveries. Sri Lanka were subsequently bowled out for 45.
Pakistan booked their place in the final after defeating Bangladesh by six wickets in a rain-affected second semi-final.
Led by Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan have fielded a side featuring several players outside their senior national team setup at the tournament.
The final pits the defending champions against Pakistan in a high-profile Asian Games cricket contest, with the gold medal at stake.
