MECCA/TAIF — Five people, including four Indian healthcare workers and their local driver, were killed in a devastating road accident on the Taif-Rania highway in western Saudi Arabia on Friday.
Among the deceased are two nurses from the southern Indian state of Kerala—Jaisymol Mathew (46), a native of Ayyarkunnam in Kottayam, and Jobina Johny, hailing from Kurumalloor in Kottayam. The two other nurses were identified as Vijayalakshmi Jagadeesh (37) from Anna Satya Nagar and Hepsiba Devamani (33) from Thanjavur, Pattukottai, both in Tamil Nadu. The local Saudi citizen who was driving the vehicle also succumbed to injuries at the scene.
All four nurses were employed under the Ministry of Health at the Al-Ghafa and Al-Avayla government clinics in the Taif Governorate.
According to officials, the tragic incident occurred during the weekend holiday while the group was travelling in the driver's vehicle toward Rania town for routine shopping. Approximately 40 kilometers from Rania, the vehicle reportedly lost control and flipped off the road. emergency responders confirmed that all five occupants died instantly from the impact.
The bodies of the deceased are currently kept at the Rania General Hospital mortuary. Local authorities, alongside community representatives and Indian diplomatic missions, are completing the necessary legal and administrative procedures to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains to India.
