NEW DELHI — Five Indian nationals were safely rescued after a Kuwait-flagged crude oil tanker was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian Embassy in Oman said.
The five Indians were on board the MT Kazimah III. The Indian Embassy in Oman coordinated their rescue with the Omani authorities, and all five were safely brought ashore. The embassy thanked Oman for its support during the operation.
The tanker was carrying crude oil and was travelling towards Lomé in Togo. The identity of the projectile and the circumstances behind the incident have not been confirmed.
The incident comes amid heightened security risks in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important routes for oil shipments. Any disruption in the waterway could affect global energy supplies and shipping.
India is closely monitoring the safety of its seafarers in the region. The Ministry of External Affairs has said more than 4,500 Indian seafarers are working on commercial vessels in the wider Gulf region.
The Indian government has also been working with Indian missions and local authorities to monitor vessel movements and the safety of Indian nationals working at sea.
