GUWAHATI — Indian Railways says 255 elephants were saved from possible train collisions in Northeast India between January and September 2026 through a combination of artificial intelligence-based alerts, speed restrictions, enhanced monitoring and the ‘Plan Bee’ system. The initiative is being used along railway stretches where elephant movement is frequently reported.
The AI-based system helps railway officials identify elephant movement near tracks and alert train crews in time. When an alert is received, trains can be slowed down or other safety measures taken to prevent collisions. Railway authorities have also continued to use ‘Plan Bee’, which uses recorded buzzing sounds similar to those of bees to encourage elephants to move away from railway tracks.
The measures are part of efforts by the Northeast Frontier Railway to reduce deaths caused by train-elephant collisions. The railway network passes through several forest areas and elephant corridors, making early detection and speed control important for both wildlife and train safety.
According to the railway authorities, the results recorded during the first nine months of this year show the role of technology and closer monitoring in reducing human-wildlife conflict along railway routes.
