Veteran Indian Actor Nana Patekar Dies at 75

PANAJI — Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar, one of the most distinctive and respected performers in Hindi and Marathi cinema, died on Thursday at the age of 75 after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa.


Patekar was found unconscious at his home in Dona Paula and was taken to Manipal Hospital. Doctors attempted to revive him for around 45 minutes with continuous CPR, but he could not be revived. He was declared dead at about 5.20 am, according to Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital. A medico-legal case has been registered and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.

Patekar had a career spanning nearly five decades and was known for his powerful performances, commanding screen presence and distinctive dialogue delivery. He began his film career with Gaman in 1978 and went on to appear in acclaimed films including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi, Ab Tak Chhappan, Welcome and Natsamrat. He also directed and starred in Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991.

His work earned him three National Film Awards and several other major honours. He was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in 2013. Patekar remained an important figure in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, moving between intense dramatic roles and popular mainstream films with equal impact.

Patekar’s death marks the loss of one of Indian cinema’s most recognisable and influential actors. His intense performances and distinctive style left a lasting mark on generations of Indian audiences.
