Dubai— Flydubai has confirmed that two additional pilots who were on board flight FZ1073 during the cockpit attack on the captain were on-duty crew members.
The Dubai–Tel Aviv flight was carrying more than 180 people when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Indian captain Smit Machchhar during the flight. The aircraft subsequently went into a steep descent before passengers and crew intervened.
The two additional pilots entered the cockpit during the incident and helped take control of the aircraft. The plane later made an emergency landing at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
The presence of the two pilots has drawn attention because earlier reports had described them as off-duty or deadheading pilots. Flydubai's clarification that they were on duty provides a new detail about their role on the flight.
According to reports, the aircraft lost more than 16,000 feet in around 30 seconds during the incident before its descent was brought under control. Passengers and crew members also intervened to restrain the co-pilot.
The incident is being investigated, with authorities examining the cockpit attack and the circumstances surrounding the emergency during the flight.
