VISAKHAPATNAM — Investigators probing an alleged espionage network in Visakhapatnam have found that Pakistan-based operatives allegedly used social media and WhatsApp to trap and blackmail civilians and naval personnel, according to investigators.
Two people have been arrested so far, while 16 others are under investigation. Authorities are examining whether information about the movement of naval ships and submarines, deployment of personnel and other sensitive details was allegedly passed to Pakistan-based operatives.
Investigators said the suspected operatives allegedly used fake identities and personal relationships to establish contact before threatening some targets with exposure or legal consequences. Andhra Pradesh’s Counter Intelligence Cell and naval authorities have been investigating the case, with electronic devices and other material seized during searches.
