NEW DELHI — India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held a telephone conversation with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, on Monday, October 12, amid continuing tensions in West Asia. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi said the two officials exchanged views on recent regional and international developments and matters of mutual interest to both countries.
The embassy did not disclose the specific issues discussed. There has been no official confirmation that attacks on commercial vessels were raised during the call.
Separately, India condemned attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz region on October 11. Nine of the 11 Indian seafarers aboard the tanker MT Petro Dolphin were rescued, while two were reported missing. All 11 Indian seafarers aboard another tanker, MT Valthera, were reported safe after the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile and caught fire.
India called for an immediate reduction in tensions and urged the parties involved to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. The Ministry of External Affairs also stressed that attacks on commercial vessels, seafarers and civilian infrastructure must stop, and that safe passage through international waterways must be maintained.
While the precise agenda of the Doval-Rezaei conversation has not been made public, maritime security and the safety of Indian seafarers remain important concerns for New Delhi amid the regional crisis.
