DUBLIN — Ireland is witnessing a notable spike in Covid-19 infections and hospitalisations driven by the rapid spread of the Omicron sublineage XFG, widely dubbed the "Stratus" or "American Covid" variant. In response to the growing wave, health authorities are urging members of the public to strictly adhere to official self-isolation measures.
Medical professionals have pointed to several hallmark indicators that distinguish the strain from earlier iterations. Pharmacist Daniel Cheung highlighted hoarseness and a scratchy or raspy voice as defining features of the Stratus subvariant. Additional common symptoms include a dry cough, sore throat, high fever, exhaustion, and severe joint and muscle aches reminiscent of acute flu. Complete loss of taste and smell has become substantially less frequent compared to earlier pandemic waves.
Key HSE Health Guidelines:
- Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 must self-isolate at home for a minimum of 5 days.
- Leaving isolation after 5 days is only recommended if symptoms have substantially or fully resolved for at least 48 hours.
- Close contact with older adults or clinically vulnerable individuals should be completely avoided for 10 days from the initial onset of symptoms
