NEW DELHI — The INDIA bloc on Sunday held a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. Addressing the gathering, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said Kumar would “go to jail” and warned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would also face legal action.
The rally, held under the slogan ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’, was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, among others. The march began near the Minto Road–Connaught Place junction and proceeded through Ajmeri Gate before reaching Ramlila Maidan.
The Opposition has alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has led to the removal of eligible voters’ names and raised concerns about transparency in the exercise. INDIA bloc leaders called for accountability and safeguards to ensure that eligible citizens are not denied their voting rights.
The Election Commission has rejected allegations of political bias, saying the revision is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries and improve the accuracy of electoral rolls. It has also said that people whose names were wrongly deleted can apply for re-enrolment. The BJP has dismissed the Opposition’s allegations, accusing it of targeting constitutional institutions and questioning legitimate electoral processes.
More than 130 million names have been removed from voter lists since the revision began last year, according to a Reuters report. The figures include people recorded as deceased, those who have moved and individuals who could not be traced. The scale of the deletions and the safeguards available to eligible voters remain at the centre of the political dispute.
