Delta Cron is a newly discovered Covid variant that combines mutations from Omicron and Delta. Earlier this year, a lab in Cyprus had previously raised concerns that it had found evidence of a delta-omicron recombination event.

There was concern that both variants could infect a patient together and pass on genetic material to produce new virus mutations. However, now virologists from Institute Pasteur in Paris have adjusted the genome of an original 'Delta Cron' variant, which has been found in many parts of France and has been reported to be circulating since early January.

The researchers said hybrid versions of the corona virus, which combines genes from the Delta and Omicron variants - known as "delta Cron", had been identified in at least 17 patients in the United States and Europe. On the virus research bulletin boards, other teams have reported 12 more Delta Cron infections in Europe since January - all of which are Omicron Chick and Delta Body.

The scientists added that the team had designed a PCR test that could "quickly test positive samples for the presence of this ... virus".

It is known that genetic recombination of human corona viruses occurs when two strains affect the same host cell. "During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, two or more variants were propagated together at the same time and in the same geographical area, creating opportunities for reunification between the two variants.
