Rome: Italy is preparing for the general election on Sunday, September 25. An Indian National, who living in Italy is also competing in the Italian parliamentary elections this time. Mr. Sibi Mani, Kumaramangalam, a native of Kottayam Etumanur, Kerala is contesting as a Democratic Party (PD) candidate. This is the first time that the party has given this position to a Malayali of Asian Indian origin. At present, Mr. Sibi Mani, is the president of the party's Rome region.
Exit polls predicted a big win for alliance party, which includes the parties of right-wing allies Giorgia Meloni, Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi. The country is looking forward to a woman prime minister in this election.
This summer is the first election in Italy's history. Regular elections are held during the winter. It was triggered by the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi on July 21 and the collapse of his grand coalition government, which included left-wing, right-wing and centrist parties. Draghi came to power after another coalition led by lawyer Giuseppe Conte collapsed in January 2021. Draghi's resignation has consequently led to the country's first general election season in August. Another feature is that 4 of the former prime ministers are contesting.
Former Prime Minister Enrico Letta of the main party Democratic Party (2013). Matteo Renzi, who came to power in February 2014, Giuseppe Conte of the Five Star Movement 2018-2021 and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi are in the running.
