Belfast: For the first time in its 100-year history, the Northern Ireland census report recorded more Catholics than Protestants. Census 2021 figures show that 45.7% of Northern Ireland's population is Catholic, and 43.5% is Protestant or of another Christian faith. It was the first time that the proportion of Catholics in the population exceeded the number of Protestants.

Census figures usually prompt debate about what they mean for the future of Northern Ireland and public opinion on Irish reunification.
In 2021, the main religions present were: Catholic (42.3%); Presbyterian (16.6%); Church of Ireland (11.5%); Methodist (2.3%); other Christian denominations (6.9%); and other religions (1.3%),'' census figures show. 17.4% of the population had 'no religion' - a marked increase from 2011 when 10.1% had 'no religion'', according to a bulletin document releasing the figures. This points to the growing secularization of our population, the bulletin said.
The proportion of the population in the 2021 census ranged from 30.6% in Ards & North Down Council to 7.8% in Mid Ulster Council. All councils are more secular in 2021 than they were ten years ago. Combining current religion and upbringing religion, 45.7% of the population are 'Catholic', 43.5% are 'Protestant, other Christian or Christian-affiliated' and 1.5% are from other non-Christian religions.
In 2011, 48% of the population reported being Protestant or having been raised Protestant, down five percentage points from 2001. The Catholic population that year was 45%, up one percentage point in 2001. The remaining 9.3% of the population, or 177,400 people in the 2021 census, did not belong to or were raised in any religion. This group has grown in size since 2011, when 5.6% or 101,200 people registered this way.
