CANADA: Be vigilant': Ministry's advice to Indians in Canada amid rise in hate crimes

India on Friday issued an advisory, asking its nationals in Canada to 'exercise due caution and remain vigilant' amid a spike in hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Indian missions in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested them to probe these crimes.

"In view of the increasing incidences of crimes as described above, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those proceeding to Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise due caution and remain vigilant," the Ministry of External Affairs said.

An argument has recently broken out between India and Canada over the recent staging of a so-called referendum by "pro-Khalistan" groups on forming an independent country for Sikhs. This is when the foreign ministry's warning comes out. India referred to the purported vote in Khalistan that separatist organisations held as a "farcical exercise."

"It's what we would call a ridiculous exercise. Extremists and radical groups supporting the so-called Khalistan referendum in Canada organised a ridiculous exercise "Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for MEA, said. According to him, India raised the matter with Canadian officials, who reiterated their respect for India's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The warning for Indian nationals and students in Canada noted that "there has been a substantial spike in incidences of hate crimes, sectarian violence, and anti-India actions in Canada."

"Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those travelling to Canada for travel or education are encouraged to exercise necessary caution and remain watchful," it stated. "In view of the increased incidents of crimes as described above."

Indian citizens and students from India studying in Canada can also register with the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, Indian Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver, or the  MADAD portal at madad.gov.in, according to the advise.

Earlier this month, a prominent Hindu temple was defaced by 'Canadian Khalistani extremists' with anti-India graffiti in Canada. The Indian high commission strongly condemned the incident and requested Canadian authorities to investigate the matter and take prompt action against the perpetrators.
