IRELAND: Know these things before traveling to Ireland & Be aware of rental Scam

Dublin: People should beware of rental scams, especially this time of year when students are returning to college or arriving in Ireland for work for the first time.

You should only use authorized letting agencies or deal with people in good faith. Websites can be cloned, check the URL to make sure it's a genuine website and note the privacy and refund policy sections.

Communicate only through Messenger or WhatsApp where social media ads or a person's location allows. You should try for direct answers and avoid responses immediately if they are vague.

Beware of unsolicited contacts or where the contact appears to be based in other jurisdictions, especially if there is a sense of urgency such as a "one-time offer" or "last chance now".

If you have decided to take up the offer, please use only trusted money transfer systems, never transfer money directly, pay, or pay into cryptocurrency wallets.

Be wary if a website asks you to send money to a random PAYPAL address, wire it through Western Union, pay in iTunes gift cards, or pay for a long-term rental stay through a short-term letting website. Only deals in cryptocurrency. Most of the time, those methods are done to avoid scrutiny and ensure that the transaction cannot be undone.

Red Flags/Warning Signs:

  • When the landlord is unable to meet up to show you the property in person
  • When communication is only through text/WhatsApp or another social media platform. Beware of cloned sites
  • When the property is offered with no questions asked and payment demanded immediately before signing the lease
  • When you are asked to pay cash, cryptocurrency or money via a non-bank transfer (such as wire transfer).
  • Below market rental rate

Check List:

  • Never agree to rent a property without first having the opportunity to view it
  • Do not hand over cash. Insist upon a proper receipt
  • Ensure that the keys work and you have proper contact details for the landlord/agent.

How To Stay Safer:

  • Only use recognised agencies or deal with trusted people
  • Be wary of people who will only communicate via WhatsApp and social media
  • Do not pay for long-term accommodation through short term letting sites.
