The United States has issued a new travel advisory asking citizens to exercise "heightened caution" when traveling to India due to "crime and terrorism," news agency PTI reported. According to the report, the US State Department has advised them not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir and within 10 km of the Indo-Pak border due to the risk of armed conflict.

"Due to terrorism and civil turmoil, avoid travelling to: The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with the exception of the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh. Due to the possibility of armed conflict, within 10 kilometres of the Pakistan-India border, "It said.
On a scale of one to four, the US has lowered India's travel advisories to level 2, which means "Exercise Increased Caution."
WHAT DOES THE ADVISORY SAY?
"Indian authorities report that rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India. Violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations," the advisory added.

It stated that because US government staff needed special permission to go to certain regions, "the US government has limited ability to deliver emergency assistance to its residents in rural areas from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana through western West Bengal."
