A senior minister of former Prime Minister Imran Khans Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Party was allegedly abducted, along with two others, from Gilgit-Baltistan region in northern Pakistan by armed men belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on Friday afternoon.
The minister and the tourists were released on Saturday after negotiations with the militants, who have been demanding the release of their jailed accomplices, showed a video clip released by the abducted minister Abaidullah Baig.
In the video clip making the rounds on social media, Baig said he was kidnapped while he was on his way from Islamabad to Gilgit by militants, who set up blockades on one of the major arterial roads linking Pakistan's restive provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
Around 4 p.m. on Friday, the road in Thak village of Chilas in Diamer was blocked by Habibur Rahman and his colleagues, the most wanted terrorist commander in Gilgit-Baltistan, who is suspected of killing 10 foreigners in Nanga Parbat. This left travellers on both sides stuck.
According to sources, the militants were demanding the release of their accomplices, including those involved in the gruesome murder of foreigners in the Nanga Parbat area and other terrorist incidents in Diamer. The militants have also demanded the "imposition of Islamic laws, with no women sports activities" in the province.
Faizullah, a former representative of the Gilgit-Baltistan administration, claimed to have spoken to Abaid Ullah Baig when the minister was being held by militants and that negotiations for his release were in progress.
While this was going on, the Pakistani broadcaster Geo TV announced that Baig, who was kidnapped from Gilgit-Babusar Baltistan's Road, had returned home.
On a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) ticket, Baig was elected from Hunza, which is located in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan province.
The incident came to light on Friday as Pakistani senators expressed concern over the rise in terrorist activities by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned organisation, and as a senator requested information regarding a recent threat alert issued by the interior ministry about the increased risk of terrorist attacks by the group.
After talks with the TTP proved fruitless, the home ministry recently warned of a growing possibility of terrorist attacks by the outfit or its factions.
