Representatives from the HSE are currently before the Oireachtas joint committee on health and told TDs and senators that so far around 500 people have been vaccinated against monkeypox.
Of them, more than 160 vaccines were given after monkeypox infection and more than 300 were given as a preventative precaution.
A monkeypox vaccine is thought to be beneficial for between 6,000 and 13,000 persons, according to Dr. Siobhan Ni Bhriain, the National Clinical Director for Integrated Care at the HSE, who stated this in her opening speech before TDs and Senators.
With the opening of 11 vaccine centres, those in need of the monkeypox vaccine will be required to assess their own risk and schedule an appointment.
The Department of Health and the Health Service are working to obtain more doses of the monkeypox vaccination despite the fact that the HSE has already obtained more than 2,000 vials of it.
The European Medicines Agency informed nations earlier this year that they could give the vaccine intradermally, which would use less vaccine per injection.
Since outbreaks were first discovered earlier this year, the HSE has determined that there have been a total of 194 cases of monkeypox in Ireland.
Eleven of these instances required hospitalisation due to the illness. The majority of the cases are in men, and the affected people have an average age of 35.
The incoming Chief Medical Officer Dr. Breda Smyth will serve as the chair of the advisory council on monkeypox, according to a statement made by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly in August.
The new organization's responsibility is to monitor the evidence on the spread of the disease and advise the government on how to effectively deal with the epidemic of monkeypox.
Even though the new CMO will serve as its chair, the group comprises specialists in public health, infectious diseases, and immunology.
