Gardaí have announced this morning that 7 people have died in an explosion in Creeslough, County Donegal, in the early hours of today, 8 October 2022. Four more people have been confirmed dead in the Creeslough disaster in addition to the three people who died yesterday. Gardai have confirmed they have been carrying out a "search and recovery" since the morning.
Many people were trapped at the site of the explosion at the service station. Several people are being treated in hospital following the blast, which Sinn Féin TD Piers Doherty described as his "worst nightmare".
Yesterday, eight people were shifted to hospital for medical treatment. Even after 3.15 yesterday afternoon, the debris from the collapsed building is still being removed. Rescue operations are being delayed as specialist equipment is used to gently move the debris. Members of the coastguard, garda and ambulance services remain at the scene.
Images shared on social media show damage from the explosion in County Donegal. A supermarket and houses built in the vicinity were badly damaged and the roof of the building partially collapsed. The force of the blast ripped away the outer wall, collapsed houses and damaged several cars.
Gardai continue to urge any road users planning to travel to the Creeslough area for any reason to consider alternative routes as emergency services continue to deal with the incident. Traffic diversions continue at this time.
Letterkenny University Hospital has now been placed on major emergency standby. The hospital said in a statement that it was dealing with a serious incident where multiple people needed immediate attention. The hospital is asking the public not to come to the emergency department unless it is an emergency. People are advised to contact their GP or NowDoc service first. The HSE said the Nowdoc service has increased staff to help deal with any additional demand.
