Dublin: Around 66,000 Covid-19 frontline workers are still waiting for a €1,000 pandemic bonus payment. The Health Minister says most payments are expected to be made before Christmas.
Many claims from employers have only come to the government in the past two weeks, and Health Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed today that he hopes to process those claims before Christmas.
The payment was first introduced late last year and officially announced in January as a token of appreciation for the work of healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Those eligible for payment include full-time and part-time healthcare workers who worked in virus-affected settings for at least four weeks between March 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.
They include health workers in nursing homes, porters in health care settings, cleaners, hospice workers, student nurses, staff in HSE test centres, members of the Defense Forces, those working in healthcare roles and staff in private sector nursing homes.
Both full-time and part-time workers are eligible for payment, although the amount payable for the latter has to be calculated on a pro-rata basis. Although a declaration form must be completed to request payment by the end of June, employees who quit or moved during this period are also eligible.
When the payments started earlier this year, questions continue to be asked about why some workers received their payment and others did not. However, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly told the Oireachtas Health Committee today that 190,000 workers are entitled to the tax-free payment. He confirmed that about 124,000 people have been paid till date.
