Bank of Ireland warning: Beware of 40% rise in fraudulent text and call cases

Bank of Ireland reports that the number of fraudulent text message and phone call cases has increased by almost 40% in the past two weeks compared to the previous month.

In order to trick people into giving up their bank account information, fraudsters are using a technique that the bank is currently alerting clients to.

According to the report, fraudsters are intensifying their efforts to gain access to clients' accounts by texting them first and calling them later to get their information.

According to Bank of Ireland, once they have access to the accounts, money is either transferred into money-mule accounts or is promptly spent on pricey commodities like electronic goods.

The amount of combined fraudulent text message and phone call incidents that Bank of Ireland's fraud prevention team has identified over the past two weeks has grown by around 40% when compared to the same period last month.

Customers are advised to watch out for texts with the Bank of Ireland logo that warn them to expect a call from the bank, texts with the Bank of Ireland logo that provide a phoney phone number to call, and texts with the An Post or HSE logo that direct users to phishing websites.

"Fraudsters are trying to steal people's money with ever-increasing tenacity. Fraudsters are increasingly calling victims after sending them fraudulent texts in an effort to get them to provide their personal information, according to Edel McDermott, head of fraud at Bank of Ireland.

"Even if you receive a text message informing you to expect the call, be wary if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from your bank, credit card company, or another business you may trust. Do not divulge your card, account, or banking information, regardless of the narrative that is being offered to you. If you have any doubts, end the call right away and do not call the number back, McDermott said.

And always keep in mind not to call any numbers you receive in a text message or open any links. The phone number on the back of your card or a published phone number can be used to contact your bank.
