Dublin: Central psychiatric hospitalization ( CMH ) moved from Victorian-era buildings to a new purpose-built facility. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly opened yesterday. This is a project that costs € 200 million. HSE National Forensic Mental Health Service ( NFMHS ) Campus-replaced Central Mental Hospital, which has now moved from Dundrum to Portrane in North County Dublin.
The new facility with 130 bedrooms can provide more patients with care, with collective activities and treatments around indoor and outdoor spaces where small wards are shared. In addition, community and prison in-reach services can provide 170 patients with the ability to care and community and prison in-reach services when fully operational in the future. The hospital has a forensic child and adolescents mental health service and an intensive care rehabilitation unit ( ICRU ) on the site. In addition, CMH is the only hub in the country where specialist forensic psychiatric treatment is provided for medium and long-term mental care. The center also has mental health treatment services, GPs and dentists.
There are shared recreational facilities, including a ‘ Village Center ’ a horticultural area, gym, a workshop and a music room , A set of courtyards and safe gardens allow patients to access nature directly from each ward.
The facility aims to ensure that patients live in a suitable residence for their needs. Another goal of the restructuring is to reduce the costs associated with prisons and other HSE services.
Although the Dundrum site has the capacity of 96 patients, the National Forensic Mental Health Service initially increases that capacity to 110 beds, and in 2023 it will rise to 130 beds. There will be more employment opportunities here.
