Dublin: 3,000 people queue to receive Christmas food vouchers at Capuchin Day Centre

Dublin: Around 3,000 people queued outside Dublin's Capuchin Day Center this morning to receive vouchers to buy food over the Christmas period. A long queue of people had formed on Bow Street ahead of the 8am opening of the centre. It had men and women of all ages, from the very old to mothers with prams and little children.

Due to high demand for tickets, the center had to temporarily suspend distribution last week for security reasons, with gardaí officers in charge of crowd control on hand to control traffic and maintain order in the line.

According to many on line, these little coupons can make a big difference to them during the holidays. People say that the current cost of living is unaffordable and the cost of everything has gone up. “You know, the price of food is blinding. Even if things get out of hand, [the government] doesn't seem to be doing much to help the underprivileged. The rich and the underprivileged are getting richer. That's the truth.

A person who has been frequenting this center for years says. Without this facility I cannot wash or bathe, he continued. "I've been on a public housing waiting list for the last ten or fifteen years, but they don't have the power to help me, so I have to use it for my baths and showers. I work for a living and don't get any benefits from it. The government, yet I have to use it. I've worked in this country all my life. done, paid taxes for most of my life and still got nothing,” said a 50-year-old man.

Founded by Brother Kevin Crowley, who retired in August, the Capuchin Center has been operating in the northern city for more than 50 years. Here year-round, it provides breakfast and lunch to those in need, laundry facilities and donations such as baby food and diapers. According to staff at the Capuchin Day Centre, there has never been such a high demand for the service. However this morning, 3,000 vouchers are being processed.

Before the outbreak of Covid-19, the center used to send food boxes every year at Christmas time. Now, vouchers are distributed here. Those who queued this morning to receive €50 worth of Dunnes Stores coupons were all queued earlier in the week.
