Dublin: The chief medical officer urged people to stay home if they have flu-like symptoms and return to wearing masks on public transport. Breda Smith said the advice included not going to Christmas parties or seeing family members on Christmas Eve if they have Covid symptoms.
Prof Smith said he was very concerned about the recent rise in coronavirus hospital admissions and urged people to make a concerted effort over the next four to six weeks to reduce transmission. She also urged people to get a flu or covid vaccine if they haven't already. Prof Smith, who was previously Deputy CMO and then Interim CMO, succeeded Dr.Tony Holohan in October.
There was "a lot" of Covid in the environment. But it has now reached new heights, she said. However, we have observed a significant increase in the number of actual Covid cases, especially in the last week.
"Covid cases in our hospital have increased by 50% in the last week." There are currently 624 Covid patients in hospitals, up from 430 a week ago." Also, 113 more confirmed cases have been reported in hospitals in the last 24 hours, bringing the seven-day average to 96. Thus, there are an average of 96 new Covid hospitalizations per day. Our seven-day average is one or Two weeks ago it was around 50 or 60, so it's up dramatically.
As of Friday, an average of 75 Covid-19 hospitalizations per day. They claimed that if paxlovide is given early and a person chooses to take it, access can be avoided to some extent.
Those who may benefit from antiviral drugs include those with weakened immune systems, those over 65 who have not been fully vaccinated, and those over 75 who have been vaccinated.
It is critical that Covid still exists and that it still causes serious illness. She said people are being encouraged to once again wear masks when using public transport and to stay home if they show symptoms. They said that all windows in buses should be opened to improve ventilation.
I believe that if each of us tries to protect ourselves from the disease over the next four to six weeks, we will succeed in preventing it from affecting our vulnerable loved ones—be it our family or extended family-CMO added
Flu, covid, and RSV are seeing significant increases, especially among our young people. To prevent this our health system cannot really get through this tough season, which usually poses a challenge to spread.
"Staying at home is crucial if a person is symptomatic. So, avoid going to that party, work or school because if you are symptomatic the rate of transmission is very high.
According to the CMO, these include a new cough, sore throat, fever or runny nose. Flu, covid and RSV are the three viruses currently circulating at the same moment. All of these exhibit respiratory symptoms.
So these are all serious diseases that can make you extremely sick and spread through the same methods. It is important for people with new-onset respiratory symptoms to stay at home until they are significantly better, as this can significantly reduce the risk of further transmission.
