The canteen of the Dublin City Council building is part of seven closure orders issued in November by the Food Safety Authority (FSA).
Four of the closure orders were served under FSAI Act, 1998 and three including the Dulin City Council canteen were served under European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020.
Some of the reasons for the closure orders in November included: procedures not being in place to deal with pests gaining entry to the premises and a dead mouse being found in a trap underneath shelving used for storing food and equipment.
There were also problems with pest proofing, such as gaps and holes that allowed pests to enter, evidence of recent rodent activity in the kitchen and counter service, a lack of washbasins for hand washing, and inspectors who saw food handlers not washing their hands.
The four restaurants that received closure orders under the FSAI Act are Brambles Deli Café (on appeal), Pizza Max, 64 Talbot Street, Dublin 1, Grandons Centra Sallybrook, Glanmire, Cork, and the Waterfront Diner, Dundee St Johnston, Donegal.
Dr. Pamela Byrne, chief executive of the FSAI, commented on the closure orders issued in November, stating that it is a legal necessity for all food businesses to have a reliable food safety management system in place that also assures a high degree of pest control.
"Rodent and insect infestations are a constant occurrence, according to environmental health officers. A food safety management system, which was set up to guarantee food safety and hygiene, has failed in this instance.
All food enterprises are required by law to make sure that the food they are preparing, serving, or selling is safe for consumption. Consumers have a right to safe food.
"With the Christmas period already underway, food businesses must ensure they maintain high food safety standards at all times."
