Dublin: Possibility of power blackouts. Electricity supply is going to be “quite tight” for the next two weeks, the Tanaiste has said.
Leo Varadkar said an amber energy alert could be issued due to low temperatures and low wind speed affecting supply. "We can't guarantee" there won't be a red alert, Deputy Prime Minister Leo Vardkar confirmed. Deputy Prime Minister Leo Vardkar said homes were unlikely to suffer blackouts amid weather warnings, but it "cannot be ruled out" that homes, farms and small businesses would be affected.
Leo Varadkar confirmed that Eirgrid and the Energy Regulator have advised the Government that there will be periods when the margin between supply and demand is tight.
"We've come close to an Amber Alert in the last couple of days. We haven't had one since August - it could happen," Varadkar told the Dáil. "We cannot guarantee" that there will be no red alert, he added. If this happens, "where the demand for power outstrips the amount we can generate, the first port of call is to power down large power users, such as data centers that have their own backup power".
The margin between power supply and demand will be tight "throughout winter". However, he said the current supply could "cope very well".
The margin between supply and demand in the power grid will be tight throughout the winter, with low wind speeds contributing to this, however the current information I have is that the supply can cope well with current conditions. If there is a problem with supply, the first step is to reduce demand for large commercial customers" "Only after that will there be any move to disrupt domestic supply, but that has not been flagged yet.
The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management says many preparations have been made ahead of the cold weather and local authorities and Met Eireann are working together.
