The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising all road users to brace for dangerous conditions on roads and footpaths as Met Eireann has issued warnings of low temperatures and snow. Bitterly cold, low temperatures and snow are expected across Ireland from Wednesday into the weekend, both day and night.

Road users should expect cold conditions and be extra cautious on untreated road surfaces.

Road users should watch out for black ice. If the road is polished or shiny, it is "black ice" which can be one of the worst hazards of winter. Black ice is hard to see. Mostly transparent ice, it often looks innocuous and is therefore completely ignored. Black ice is likely to form on roads, under trees and near high walls.

Snowy conditions
  • Clean your vehicle's windows and mirrors, and carry a screen scraper and de-icer.
  • Remember that it takes longer to stop in icy conditions. Handle gently, slow down, and leave an extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.
  • Increase your braking distance or 'safe space'. Avoid excessive steering, hard braking and hard acceleration.
  • Use the *highest possible gear to avoid wheel spin. Choose a *lower gear especially if going through curves.
  • Check the tires and replace them if the tread depth is less than 3 mm. Check that they are inflated to the correct tire pressure.
  • Familiarize yourself with any safety assistance technology in your vehicle, such as electronic stability control (ESC) or anti-lock braking system (ABS).
  • Watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and allow extra space when passing them.
  • Buying tyres(Types of tyres, re-treads, winter tyres, importing tyres https://www.rsa.ie/road-safety/road-users/vehicle-components/tyres/buying-tyres
*What is high gear and low gear?
The lower the gear, the more power you get. The higher the gear, the faster your engine runs! Manual and automatic transmissions usually shift from lower to higher gears as the accelerator is used and vice versa.

School holidays

School closures due to bad weather are decided by the schools' individual management teams, so it is up to them to decide whether the cold and snow is bad enough, the Education Department said.
