Grimes Defends Indian Community Amid Controversy Over Sriram Krishnan’s Appointment

Canadian singer and songwriter Grimes, formerly in a relationship with entrepreneur Elon Musk, has spoken out against online racism targeting the Indian community following Sriram Krishnan’s appointment to the Donald Trump administration. Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, addressed the issue in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing her personal connection to Indian culture and condemning the discriminatory remarks circulating on social media.

Grimes Stands Up Against Racism

In her response, Grimes called out the sudden wave of anti-Indian sentiment, stating, “Suddenly concocting anti-Indian energy out of nowhere is embarrassing, y’all. Also, they were clear they planned to do this.”

She went on to share her personal background, revealing that she grew up in a multicultural environment after her mother married Ravi Sidhoo, director of Vancouver-based East India Carpets. “My stepdad’s Indian. I had a fire childhood in a half-Indian household. Indian culture jives very well with Western culture,” she wrote.

Embracing Cultural Fusion

Grimes highlighted the cultural blending she experienced during her upbringing, describing it as a source of strength. She also addressed the broader cultural and economic ties between India and the West, remarking, “We’ve already flooded India with American gadgets, causing them problems. But if we had sent more companies, they would’ve benefitted through job creation.”

A Call for Perspective

Grimes criticized the toxic nature of social media, urging people to resist the psychological traps it sets. “I’m also seeing lots of powerful people disagreeing. It’s good to remember negative comments feel louder and more numerous. If you haven’t much been subjected to social media toxicity, it’s good to remember your monkey brain is telling you you’re gonna get kicked out of the tribe and die of starvation or worse. Important to fight the monkey brain impulses that social media seeks to trigger,” she wrote.

Context of the Controversy

Grimes’ comments come amidst a broader debate surrounding immigration policies in the U.S., particularly the H1B visa program, which allows skilled foreign workers to live and work in the country. The online backlash following Krishnan’s appointment highlights ongoing tensions in the discourse around immigration and multicultural integration in the U.S.

Grimes’ defense of the Indian community has drawn praise from many, positioning her as a voice of reason amid the uproar.
