MUMBAI — India’s markets regulator has relaxed know-your-customer requirements, allowing eligible overseas investors to complete digital onboarding without travelling to India.
The revised rules cover non-resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India and foreign nationals living in countries that comply with Financial Action Task Force standards. Financial institutions can accept KYC documents digitally and use video-based identity verification where necessary.
Intermediaries can also rely on eligible KYC records held by other regulated financial institutions. However, the institution onboarding the investor will remain responsible for completing the required checks and due diligence.
The revised framework will take effect on December 3, 2026. The move is expected to make access to India’s securities markets easier for eligible overseas investors.
