NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to former Tamil Nadu chief minister and legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) on his birth anniversary, lauding his contributions to Tamil Nadu’s growth and development.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, "Today, on his birth anniversary, we remember and celebrate the life of the great MGR. He was a true icon of Tamil cinema and a visionary leader. His films, particularly those on social justice and empathy, won hearts beyond the silver screen."
He further added, "As a leader and chief minister, he worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu's growth and development. His work continues to inspire us."
M.G. Ramachandran, a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s political and cinematic landscape, began his political career with the DMK before founding the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) following ideological differences with M. Karunanidhi.
Under his leadership, the AIADMK rose to power in 1977, marking the beginning of a new political era in Tamil Nadu. MGR served as chief minister until his demise in 1987, leaving behind a legacy of welfare-oriented policies and people-centric governance.
Widely revered for his charisma and dedication to social justice, MGR’s contributions as both a cultural icon and a political leader continue to resonate across Tamil Nadu. His birth anniversary remains a significant occasion, celebrated with respect and admiration by millions.
