Shashi Tharoor Urges Swift Resolution of Munambam Waqf Land Dispute, Rejects Communal Narrative

KOCHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday urged the Kerala government to expedite efforts to resolve the Waqf land dispute in Munambam, Ernakulam district. Emphasizing the technical and legal nature of the issue, Tharoor cautioned against framing it as a communal conflict.

Residents of Cherai and Munambam have accused the Waqf Board of unlawfully claiming their land and property, despite their possession of registered deeds and valid land tax receipts. Protesters from Munambam, who have been on a hunger strike for 96 days, have called on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to intervene and provide a lasting solution.

Interacting with reporters after meeting with the protesters, Tharoor clarified, “This is not a Muslim-Christian issue. It is a technical and legal matter that should be resolved accordingly. Turning it into a communal conflict would only escalate tensions. The state government must act swiftly to address this administrative and legal confusion.”

Tharoor further appealed for urgency in the judicial process, stating, “No one should have to wait any longer. The state government must establish the facts and ensure that justice is served. People deserve clarity and rightful ownership of their lands.”

Tharoor Responds to RSS Chief’s “True Independence” Remark

Responding to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent statement that India attained “true independence” after the consecration of the Ram temple, Tharoor strongly rejected the notion.

“Independence was achieved through the sacrifices and hard work of countless individuals, beginning with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation. Such remarks disregard the immense contributions of freedom fighters who dedicated their lives and endured British jails to secure the freedom we enjoy today,” he said.

Tharoor added that while Bhagwat may have his own political interests, categorizing independence in such a manner undermines the achievements of those who fought for the nation. “How can any responsible Indian diminish the legacy of our freedom fighters and the sacrifices they made?” he posed.

The Congress MP’s remarks come amidst growing debates over historical narratives and the importance of safeguarding communal harmony in politically sensitive issues.
