Ten Killed, 30 Injured in Vehicle Attack on New Orleans’ Canal and Bourbon Street

United States : In a tragic turn of events, ten individuals lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries after a vehicle plowed into a crowd on New Orleans’ Canal and Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning. The Associated Press, citing NOLA Ready—the city’s emergency preparedness agency—confirmed the devastating incident. The New Orleans Police Department described the occurrence as a mass casualty event, involving multiple fatalities.

Preliminary reports indicate the incident unfolded during the early hours of the day, with local media suggesting that the suspect may have been wearing body armor and wielding an assault rifle. Conflicting accounts emerged regarding the type of vehicle used in the attack. While CBS News reported a pickup truck, local outlets and witnesses on social media suggested an SUV was involved.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle drove at high speed into a densely populated area teeming with New Year’s revelers. Witnesses reported that the driver exited the vehicle and opened fire on the crowd before being met with return gunfire from police officers present at the scene.

The incident occurred in one of New Orleans’ busiest areas, where party-goers had gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve, accompanied by live jazz performances outside local bars. Among the witnesses was Jim Mowrer, a U.S. Army veteran, who recounted the harrowing experience on X (formerly Twitter):

"An SUV came down speeding and running people over. Mass casualty event, tried to give first aid but most were dead. Estimate double-digit deaths."

Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to five hospitals across the city for urgent medical attention.

The tragedy struck as New Orleans approached the conclusion of its New Year’s festivities, casting a somber shadow over the city just hours before the Allstate Sugar Bowl—a major college football event—at the Caesars Superdome, where thousands of spectators were expected to gather.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, and further details are awaited as the city comes to terms with this shocking incident.
