Ahmedabad, May 22 — In a high-scoring contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, Gujarat Titans endured a rare stumble in their otherwise dominant IPL 2025 campaign, falling to Lucknow Super Giants by 33 runs in the 64th league fixture. Despite the defeat, the Titans continue to lead the points table with 18 points from 13 matches.
Opting to bowl first, Titans captain Shubman Gill’s decision proved costly as Lucknow’s Mitchell Marsh powered his side with a scintillating maiden IPL century. The Australian all-rounder’s knock laid the foundation for LSG’s imposing total of 235 for 2. A victory will guarantee them the top position on the points table with 20 points, securing a direct berth in Qualifier 1 scheduled for May 29 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur.
However, if the Titans falter against CSK, they risk slipping down the rankings. Their final position will then hinge on the outcomes of matches involving Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), both of whom have two fixtures remaining.
- Scenario 1 – Finish 1st: GT beat CSK; RCB and PBKS lose at least one of their remaining two matches.
- Scenario 2 – Finish 2nd: GT lose to CSK; RCB lose both remaining matches (vs SRH on May 23 and vs LSG on May 27); PBKS beat Mumbai Indians (May 26).
- Scenario 3 – Finish 3rd: GT lose to CSK; either RCB or PBKS win one of their remaining games.
- Scenario 4 – Finish 4th: GT lose to CSK; RCB win at least one match, PBKS beat MI, and CSK defeat GT.
In the event of finishing fourth, the Titans would face the third-placed team in the eliminator match in Mullanpur on May 30.
As the playoff race tightens, all eyes will be on GT’s final league outing and the remaining fixtures that will ultimately shape the playoff bracket. Shubman Gill and his men, while still in a commanding position, will need to regroup quickly to reclaim momentum heading into the knockout stages.
