Ahmedabad | June 12, 2025 — Shares of Boeing took a sharp hit in Thursday’s pre-market trading, plummeting over 7%, following the crash of an Air India-operated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad. At 3:26 PM IST, Boeing shares were trading down 7.72% at $197.58.
The ill-fated aircraft, operating as Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, carrying 242 passengers and crew. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, authorities have expressed fears of significant loss of life.
This marks the first crash involving the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a flagship model in the company's long-haul fleet. The Dreamliner family has previously been under scrutiny due to various technical and safety concerns, though no previous crash had been reported until now.
Air India confirmed the incident through a public statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on airindia.com and on our X handle.”
Emergency services responded swiftly. Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai confirmed that detailed information on casualties is being gathered. “We are acquiring details about the casualties,” she said.
Firefighting teams led by Fire Officer Jayesh Khadia were dispatched immediately to control the flames and assist in rescue operations. Search and evacuation efforts are ongoing at the crash site.
The incident is expected to have major implications for Boeing’s commercial aircraft program and could intensify regulatory scrutiny of the Dreamliner series.
