Israel-Iran Conflict: Tehran Caught Off Guard by Israeli Strikes Ahead of US-Iran Nuclear Talks

June 15, 2025 — In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran was reportedly taken by surprise when Israel launched a targeted military operation against key nuclear and military assets in Tehran, just days ahead of the sixth round of US-Iran nuclear negotiations scheduled in Oman. The development was reported by The New York Times, citing sources close to Iran's leadership.

Although Iranian intelligence had been aware of Israeli preparations for a potential strike, senior officials did not anticipate an actual attack while diplomatic talks with the United States were still ongoing. This miscalculation contributed to what sources have described as an “exceptionally successful” Israeli operation carried out in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to the NYT report, Iran’s leadership had dismissed warnings of imminent military action as psychological warfare aimed at extracting concessions at the negotiating table. This complacency reportedly led to a lack of preventive measures, with senior military officials, including Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, remaining in their private residences on the night of the attack. Both were reportedly killed in the strikes.

In a further blow to Iran, several scientists associated with its nuclear program also lost their lives in the coordinated assault.

The report also highlighted a critical lapse in security: Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Aerospace Forces, had convened an emergency war council with top military officials on the same night—an event that allowed Israel to eliminate multiple senior figures in a single precision bombing.

As a result of the Israeli offensive, Tehran is now said to be reconsidering its participation in the upcoming nuclear negotiations, with talks hanging in limbo amid the intensifying military conflict.
