Modi, Xi Pledge to Deepen Ties on Mutual Trust and Respect

Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday affirmed that India and China are committed to advancing their relationship on the foundation of “mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.”

In his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Modi welcomed the “peaceful atmosphere” along the border following the disengagement at two long-standing friction points—Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh.

“Last year in Kazan, we held very productive discussions that gave a positive direction to our ties. After the recent disengagement, an environment of peace and stability has emerged,” Modi said. He also announced that the two countries have reached an understanding through their Special Representatives on border management, while agreeing to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and restore direct flight services between India and China.

Highlighting the broader significance of cooperation, the Prime Minister noted: “The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked with our partnership. This will also contribute to the welfare of humanity as a whole. We are determined to take our relations forward on the basis of trust, respect, and sensitivity.”

The talks between Modi and Xi mark a significant development, coming during Modi’s first visit to China in seven years. His presence at the summit—also attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and several other world leaders—signals New Delhi’s intention to recalibrate its regional engagement at a time when tensions between India and the United States over trade tariffs have pushed the Asian neighbours closer.
