New Delhi – Police have charged Gaganpreet Makkad, the woman driving the BMW that fatally struck senior Finance Ministry official Navjot Singh near Dhaula Kuan on Sunday, with culpable homicide and tampering with evidence.
Investigators said Makkad drove Singh, 52, and his wife Sandeep Kaur—who sustained injuries in the crash—around 20 km to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, despite Kaur’s repeated pleas to take her husband to a nearer facility for urgent medical attention. Singh succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities noted that several hospitals were significantly closer to the accident site, including Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital (7.8 km away) and AIIMS (12 km away). When questioned, Makkad claimed she chose Nulife Hospital because she trusted it, saying doctors there had once treated her children during the pandemic. She denied any links to the facility.
Alleged Links to Hospital
However, records from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs indicate otherwise. According to documents, Makkad’s father, Javinder Singh, is a director in two companies—Nulife Advanced Diagnostics Pvt Ltd and Nulife Luxury Realtors Pvt Ltd—registered at the same address as Nulife Hospital.
Investigators further revealed that one of the hospital’s directors also sits on the boards of companies where Javinder Singh is a member. Police officials confirmed that Javinder Singh is the maternal uncle of Dr Harish Kumar, founder of Nulife Hospital, who died during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hospital, established in 1992, is currently managed by his children.
Family and Police Statements
At the time of the crash, Makkad was traveling with her husband and two children. Her husband, Parikshit Makkad, later told police he had informed his father-in-law that she was taking the injured couple to a hospital but claimed he was unaware she had chosen Nulife.
Makkad was arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, obstruction of evidence, and endangering lives.
Police continue to investigate whether her decision to bypass closer hospitals was influenced by family or business links.
