In a dramatic political development, every minister in the Gujarat government — except Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel — has tendered their resignation, setting the stage for a sweeping cabinet reshuffle.
According to sources, the Chief Minister has accepted the resignations and is slated to meet Governor Acharya Devvrat later today to stake claim for forming a new cabinet. The move, described by insiders as part of a “strategic administrative overhaul,” comes ahead of key political milestones in the state.
The new-look cabinet is expected to be unveiled tomorrow, with the swearing-in scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday, as confirmed by an official government release. Senior BJP leaders have hinted that around ten new ministers are likely to be inducted, while nearly half of the current council may be replaced to inject “fresh energy” into the government machinery.
The current Gujarat cabinet comprises 17 members, including the Chief Minister — eight of cabinet rank and an equal number serving as Ministers of State. As per constitutional provisions, the state can have up to 27 ministers, representing 15 percent of the total 182-member assembly.
The reshuffle also follows a recent organizational shake-up within the BJP. Minister of State Jagdish Vishwakarma was appointed earlier this month as the new president of the party’s Gujarat unit, succeeding Union Minister C.R. Paatil.
Bhupendra Patel, who first took over as Chief Minister in 2021, was sworn in for his second term on December 12, 2022. The latest move signals a major repositioning within Gujarat’s ruling establishment — one that could reshape the political balance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
